Cable management might not be the most exciting part of any job — but doing it right makes everything else easier. The question of hook & loop vs. zip ties comes down to one main factor: will this bundle ever need to be undone?

When Zip Ties Are the Right Call

Zip ties shine in permanent or semi-permanent installations where cables won’t be accessed regularly — inside a fixed electrical panel, along a structural cable run in a building, or securing wiring inside equipment casings. They’re fast and cheap.

The downside: they’re one-use. Once cut, they’re garbage. In applications where bundles need to be modified or expanded, you’re constantly cutting and replacing them. And if you over-tighten a zip tie on a data cable, you can actually affect signal performance by compressing the cable structure.

When Hook & Loop Straps Are the Better Choice

For anything that gets packed and unpacked, modified, transported, or inspected regularly, hook & loop is the professional standard. Event production, IT management, AV installations, broadcast, and studio environments all rely on hook & loop for exactly this reason: you can open and resecure a bundle in seconds, without any tools and without generating waste.

From a cable longevity standpoint, hook & loop is also gentler. A well-fitted velcro strap holds a bundle with distributed, even pressure rather than the point compression of a zip tie — which matters for expensive cables like audio snakes or fiber optic runs.

A Practical Guide

One more thing: JHL carries DuraGrip and VELCRO Brand straps in a range of sizes, colors, and configurations — including cinch straps with rings for hanging and rack applications, and custom-printed options for identification. The right strap for every application is available.
